BBMRI during the transition phase Print

index_animation BBMRI (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure) was one of the first projects entering the European Research Infrastructure preparatory phase of the ESFRI roadmap funded by the European Commission (EC). The preparatory phase of BBMRI came to its end in January 2011. Over the past 3 years BBMRI has grown into a 54-member consortium with more than 225 associated organisations (largely biobanks) from over 30 countries, making it one of the largest research infrastructure projects in Europe.

BBMRI will form an interface between biological specimens and data (from patients and European populations) and top-level biological and medical research. This can only be achieved through a distributed research infrastructure with operational units in most if not all participating Member States. BBMRI will be implemented under the ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) legal entity with headquarters (central coordination) in Graz, Austria, responsible for coordination of the activities of National Nodes established in participating countries. By December 2012, 14 countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden) have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) where they express their aim to establish BBMRI as an ERIC and become Members of BBMRI-ERIC. The application to the European Commission has been submitted (Business Plan, BBMRI Statutes) and BBMRI is seeking to recruit the Director General of BBMRI. The expected start date of BBMRI-ERIC operations is the second half of 2013.

When the preparatory phase of BBMRI came to its end on January 31, 2011, also the Governance and Management Structures which were based on the Grant Agreement came to end. In its final teleconference on Jan 25, 2011, the BBMRI Steering Committee agreed that the Coordinator, the Executive Manager as well as the Steering Committee of the preparatory phase will continue to function as interim bodies of BBMRI until the preparatory (governance) body (as described in the MoU) is established.

BBMRI-ERIC Inauguration Ceremony, International Biobanking Summit II & BBMRI-LPC Forum Meeting
Graz, Austria. September 16-18, 2013

Mark your calendars for the BBMRI-ERIC Inauguration Ceremony, the second International Biobanking Summit and the 1st Annual BBMRI-LPC Forum meeting to be held in September 2013 in Graz, Austria.

The BBMRI-ERIC Inauguration Ceremony, Monday, September 16, will be held under the auspi-ces of the Austrian Minister for Science and Research, Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Töchterle, in celebra-tion and recognition of the inauguration of the Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI) implemented under the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) legal entity. For further information, please visit bbmri.eu or contact Michaela Th. Mayrhofer by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The International Biobanking Summit II (IBS-II), Tuesday, September 17, is co-organized by BioSHaRE, P3G, BBMRI, ISBER, ESBB and BBMRI-LPC. The purpose of this summit is for scientists to address strategic issues critical to optimize the work of international research consortia in-cluding access and use of their biobanks and databases. For further information, please visit www.bioshare.eu or contact Anina Bjørnhaug by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The 1st Annual BBMRI-LPC (Large Population Cohorts) Forum Meeting, Wednesday, September 18, will serve as a platform for information exchange between countries with advanced popula-tion based cohorts, biobanks and registries and those that are planning to initiate large popula-tion based biobanks. The forum will also provide a possibility to present information about best practices and standard operating procedures in biobanking. Information about on-site training to scientists from countries that do not yet participate in BBMRI will also be provided. Through funding from EU the BBMRI-LPC will provide financial support towards participation of two rep-resentatives from each Member State and Associated State to Forum meetings. David Cox in memoriam

The BBMRI community received the sad news of the sudden death of David Cox, 66, on January 21, 2013. David, a Senior Vice President at Pfizer and an active member of the Scientific and Ethical Advisory Group of BBMRI during the Preparatory Phase, became familiar to many of us through his several outstanding presentations in different BBMRI events. We all learned to know David as a strong supporter of a novel type of industry-academia relationships; he was one of the founding fathers of the concept of BBMRI Expert Centers which has raised a lot of excitement all over Europe and the World.

David, an M.D. and a world-known geneticist, represented a truly rare combination of an experienced clinician, a scientist with a far-reaching foresight, and a fantastic open-hearted personality. He drew to us all a picture of a better tomorrow with molecular medicine and biobanking bringing health and well-being to humankind through better understanding of disease mechanisms. David was always available to share his enthusiasm with us, whether in an Uppsala cafeteria or a 6th Avenue restaurant in NYC. Those of us who had the privilege to work with David remember this as a wonderful and exciting experience. We have lost an outstanding scientist, wonderful colleague, friend, and important mentor for development of BBMRI. But David has shown us a clear path towards use of biobanks for better health and improved drug development. Our task now is to follow this path, and implement the visionary ideas of David Cox in BBMRI-ERIC.
